Judge Susan is the 1st Woman Judge serving in her hometown, the Town of LaGrange, previous acting Poughkeepsie City Court Judge, Town of Union Vale Justice, Town of Patterson Justice and Associate Justice, Village of Wappingers. She is a jurist who truly cares about her community. She received her Juris Doctorate from New York Law School and is a private attorney with SullivanBisceglia Law Firm, P.C., with offices at the Hudson Valley Regional Airport, Poughkeepsie, New York. Judge Susan has well over 25 years of combined experience obtained in the courts, major law firms, Fortune 500 companies and the State of New York.

Additionally, Judge Susan serves as 2nd Vice President of the New York State Magistrates Association and Past President of the Dutchess County Magistrates Association where she advocates for the interests of the courts as well as provides education to judges across New York State.

During Covid-19, she was a member of a special committee in the 9th Judicial District, serving with the Administrative Judge and leaders of the courts and guided the judiciary through the challenges of the pandemic and helped implement virtual arraignments in Dutchess County. She has been appointed to the Dutchess County Criminal Justice Council and Chairperson of the Centralized Arraignment Committee where she leads the anticipated implementation of a centralized arraignment part.

Judge Susan Licensed Commercial Pilot

Judge Susan, as a woman, is a licensed commercial pilot with both instrument and multi engine ratings, and is among only about 5% of all pilots. She is also the Past Chair of the International Organization of Women Pilots, a Member of the Lawyer Pilot Bar Association and former FAA Aviation Safety Counselor. Susan’s interest in aviation was inspired by her father, Noah Sullivan, a commercial pilot and four Great Uncles that were pilots in the US Air Force, one of which, Colonel John Lafko, a highly decorated fighter pilot MIG Master and Squadron Commander, who flew the most missions in combat ever. 

Colonel Laftko’s wingmen went on to found the U.S. Thunderbirds. The integrity and bravery that come along with being a pilot and the love of her country inspired her to become a pilot to continue her family’s heritage and work alongside her father at the Hudson Valley Regional Airport, open her own women owned aircraft brokerage firm, Sullivan Aviation NY, LLC and law practice at the Hudson Valley Regional Airport. Judge Susan incorporates those long standing qualities that come along with being a pilot, integrity, bravery, leadership, and top gun abilities into her everyday responsibilities as a Judge. Judge Susan Family

Judge Susan has a strong sense of family. She was born and raised in the beautiful Hudson Valley, Town of LaGrange where she continues to reside and raise her children. She is a caring wife, mother, sister, and daughter. Having been instilled with strong family values at an early age, Judge Susan is keenly aware of family values.

Judge Susan’s grandparents immigrated from Hungary, Ireland, and Italy. Her mother and father, Shirley and Noah Sullivan grew up in the Village of Wappingers Falls. After high school they got married and settled in their own house in the Town of LaGrange. Noah W. Sullivan Jr. was a New York State Park Police Officer and Dutchess County Deputy Sheriff. Judge Susan and her sister Sharlene grew up in LaGrange attending school through the Arlington School District. Judge Susan’s children, Brianna and Brendan also attended as well, and were involved in many activities, namely Marching Band and Varsity Baseball. Brianna graduated from New York University and is a professional musician in the Hudson Valley, also privately teaching music on trumpet and piano. Brendan is attending Marist College where he is studying Business Administration and Finance. Paul, Judge Susan’s husband, is a devoted father to Brianna and Brendan, is also born and raised in the Hudson Valley and works locally in the construction field. Judge Susan and her husband Paul have been residents in their current home in LaGrange for over 19 years now.

Judge Susan Community Service & Involvement

Judge Susan was raised to always give back to her community, through various community services and philanthropic efforts.

When Judge Susan was a young girl, herself, her grandmother, Marion Lafko Sullivan, and her sister, Sharlene, would go around to various community organizations. She has early memories of going to the Children’s Home around the holidays to give the children there presents and to spend time with them. She additionally remembers going to senior homes, especially Vassar Warner Home in Poughkeepsie to be company for the residents there, bringing treats like coffee and pastries every time she came.

This strong upbringing and instillment of community service has led Judge Susan’s life and career. She went on to work at Vassar Warner Home and became a trustee for the home. Judge Susan also brought her children into this community service involvement like her daughter Brianna giving holiday concerts on piano and putting on other themed gatherings for the residents of Vassar Warner Home. In addition, Judge Susan became involved as a volunteer for the Walkway Over the Hudson, where her daughter also became a Walkway Ambassador and volunteered performing on piano for functions like their Annual Starry Starry Night Gala. A few years later, Judge Susan was appointed to serve on the Board for Hudson Valley Hospice, where she continues to help families that are going through health hardships.

Judge Susan also enjoys being an active member of the LaGrange Lions Club and LaGrange Sunrise Rotary. Additionally at the town level, she was very involved in the Town of LaGrange Baseball League as her son, Brendan, played in the league from when he was in Kindergarten through High School. She also enjoyed being a PTA mom for both Brianna and Brendan for their whole education at Arlington and started the Noxon Road Elementary School Follies. Judge Susan was the Follies Director for six years which Brianna, Brendan and the whole family took part in. All the students in the school loved it and looked forward to it every year.

It gives Judge Susan great joy to be involved especially with the youth, their education and teach them civic mindedness. She frequently invites students of all ages (elementary to college level) into her court to observe and learn about the law and judiciary. Judge Susan has hosted several Mock Trials in the LaGrange Courtroom as well as the Village of Wappingers Falls Courtroom when she was an Acting Village Justice there. Additionally, she attends Mock Trials for different colleges and universities through the New York State Bar Association, Dutchess County Bar Association, and American Mock Trial Association (IONA University). She has also gone down to her alma mater, New York Law School, to be a Moot Court Judge for their annual law school competitions. Judge Susan believes the youth are our future and she is dedicated to helping with their education and community involvement.
